课前准备 Warm-up:

We human beings bear the hope that we can always live in harmony with nature. However, nature is not always benign to mankind. Now and on, natural disasters like hurricanes befall human beings. Before we proceed to a detailed discussion of the text, think over the following questions:

1) What crops up in your mind when you hear the term ‘hurricane’?

2) What do you think should be the proper relationship between mankind and nature?

3) What do you think mankind should do when confronted with a hurricane?


本章概览An Overview:

The text describes how the Koshaks and their friends struggled against the onslaught of Hurricane Camille. The writer portrays the characters in a heroic and appreciative way.

Confronted with the formidable hurricane, the characters show firm determination and utmost courage to fight against the natural disaster. Their mutual encouragement signifies the humanistic greatness which the writer mainly strives for in the story.

The text is a piece of narration, which is organized as follows: introduction, development, climax and conclusion. Thus, it can be divided into 4 parts.

I.The time, place, background of the conflict and the characters (paras. 1-6

1) The background of the story: the impending Hurricane Camille and the reluctance of the Koshak family to abandon their home. (para. 1)

2) Consultation for reasoning out the best course of action. (para. 2)

3) John Koshak’s (the protagonist) and his father’s confidence in beating Hurricane Camille. (paras. 3-4)

4) The preparation made by the Koshak family for the hurricane. (paras 5-6)

II.The development of the story (paras. 7-25)

1) Detailed description of the logical movement of the happenings. (paras. 7-13) The whipping of house by wind and rain (Para 7)→the shaking of the house, the falling of the ceiling and the disintegration of upstairs windows (Para 8) →the breaking-away of the front door from frame→the shuddering of the house and shifting of its foundations (Para 13)→the lifting of the entire roof of the house and the disintegration of the bottom steps of the staircase (Para 18)→the collapse of the living-room fireplace and chimney and the disintegration of the two walls of the bedroom sanctuary (Para 22)→ the toppling of the two walls in the TV room (Para 24).
