知识点三: Grammar and Writing Devices


I. Grammar

1. Word formation: compound nouns

Examples:

1. It is easy enough to see that the theatergoer never is conscious of any of these elements separately.

2. The playwright creates and develops a character in just the same way that a composer creates and develops a theme. 

3. In the meantime, Vermeer has died and in his will, has left the earrings to Griet.

II. Writing Features

How is the text structured?

(1) Clarity:introduction - body - conclusion 

(2) Logic: Using structuring adverbs

A common way of listing items, or to organize a succession of ideas, is to use structuring adverbs at the beginning of the sentence: First/Firstly, Second/Secondly, Third/Thirdly, Last/Lastly/Finally, Last but not least...

Examples:

1. The second plane on which music exists is what I have called the expressive one. 

2. The third plane on which music exists is the sheerly musical plane.
