Word formation: gender-inclusive language
Some words in English, especially those referring to jobs and professions, are gender- specific to give information about the gender of a person. For example, an actress is female, a policeman is male.
Gender neutralisation to replace gender-specific words with gender-inclusive language, to remove the basis for sexual discrimination and stereotypes.
Words which indicate gender, even if they do not always refer to that gender, are considered to be particularly inappropriate and are now avoided by many people.
Examples:
1. steward and stewardess → flight assistant
2. chairman → the gender-neutral equivalents chairperson and chair
