Mid-autumn Festival
This is a public holiday and a favourite festival among young people. It takes place on the 15th day of the 8th month when the autumn moon is at its fullest and most beautiful. For some people it is a harvest festival, but there are in addition all sorts of lovely stories about it. They involve Chang E, a beautiful woman who lives a lonely life on the moon, but just sometimes has a visitor and does a graceful dance.
The festival is about staying out at night looking at the moon, imagining her dance and the Jade Rabbit who also lives on the moon. Older people recite poetry and drink wine. Youngsters carry lanterns and lights and setout little lamps. It all looks magical.
We eat round mooncakes with sweet filings and egg yokes. Pomelos are also part of the tradition and some people put pomelo ring on their head. In Hong Kong transport is free for the night so everyone can travel round enjoying the beauty of the night.
