1. Clauses introduced by than
(1) He …has seen more daytime television than is healthy.
(2) Lindenfield believes that men are often better at helping their sons, nephews, or friends's ons than are mothers and sisters.
• In the first sentence, the pattern in the than clause is than + be + adj.
• In the second sentence the sentence pattern is than +be + noun phrases. In the second sentences, the verb can also come after the noun phrase: the mothers and sisters are. This pattern can also be used with pronouns: than they are, that is,
than + be + noun phrase = than + noun phrase + be
= than + pronoun + be
Example: rewrite the sentences using clauses introduced by than.
1. She's experienced at giving advices. I'm more experienced.
I'm more experienced at giving advice than is she.
2. You eat so much chocolate. It isn't good for you.
You eat so much chocolate than is good for you.
