(1) Reading books allows us to enjoy and celebrate this variety and difference in safety…
(2) To interact with other people's lives in the peace and quiet of our homes is a privilege which only reading fiction can afford us.
In the first sentence the subject is expressed by a gerund. In the second the infinitive is used. Notice that the first structure is more common, while the infinitive tends to be used in more formal language, or to express more abstract ideas.
