Question1: Is it immoral to encourage people to spend money that they don’t have.

Answer: It seems immoral because the credit card system invites people to get into debt. But this is the same as a number of other financial strategies from banks which actually benefit people. For instance, we can think about getting a mortgage to buy a flat or house: A bank lends you a huge amount of money that you will not be able to pay back for many years (this is probably the largest debt ordinary people will ever have). There is a great benefit here because people with mortgages have somewhere to live. The morality, for credit cards and mortgages, depends upon mutual responsibility and effort. The banks should make the effort to help people who get into financial difficulty instead of simply punishing them with high interest rates; the customers, on the other hand, should try their best to pay off their debts as soon as possible.

Question2: If companies or businesses get into debt by overspending, should they be helped by the state?

Answer: Well, from one viewpoint the state should not help them because the state does not help individuals in this way. The problem is that in many countries some companies, which are not state-owned, are crucial to the economy and to the lives of people. Such companies may include transport companies (airlines, bus and train companies), postal services, essential household supplies like gas, electricity and water. If these are in trouble, it seems reasonable for the state to help them. However, this leaves two issues: First, how the help will be given and what conditions are made to the companies? Secondly, there are difficult questions about which companies will receive help – the state can’t simply help all companies. There have to be publicized criteria about which companies are considered to be vital for society. Both of these issues seem tricky. In 2009, worldwide, many banks received enormous help, but many companies and businesses just went bankrupt without any help.
