Vocabulary

1. lodge n. & vt.

1) n. [C] a small house at the gates of a park or in the grounds of a large house, typically occupied by a gatekeeper, gardener, or other employee (公园、大房子门口看门人、园丁及其他雇工居住的)小屋

e.g. We stayed at a lodge. 我们在一间小屋里暂住。

2) n. [C] a small room at the entrance to a building such as a university, used by the person who lets people in and out (工厂、学校等 的)门房,传达室

e.g. I drove out of the gates, past the keeper's lodge. 我开车经过门房驶出大门。

3) vt. formally make sth. such as a complaint or a claim 正式提出(投诉、要求等)

e.g.

1. We reserve the right to lodge a claim for loss.

我们保留要求赔偿损失的权利。

2. It is too late to lodge any objections.

现在提出任何异议已为时太晚。

identical a.

1) exactly the same 完全相同的;一模一样的

e.g.

1. The handwriting on both cheques is identical.

两张支票上的笔迹完全相同。

2. The fingerprints of no two persons are identical.

没有两个人的指纹是完全相同的。

2) (of twins) developed from a single fertilized ovum, and therefore of the same sex and usually very similar in appearance(双胞胎)同卵的

e.g. Even identical twins are unique as individuals.

即使同卵双胞胎作为个体也是独特的。

faint vi. & a.

1) vi. suddenly become unconscious for a short time, and usually fall to the ground 昏厥;晕倒

e.g. She fainted at the sight of blood. 她一见到血就晕倒了。

2) a. a faint sight, sound, smell, or taste is not strong or clear (景象、声音、气味等)微弱的,不清晰的

e.g.

1. The crystals give off a faint glow. 这些水晶发出微弱的光芒。

2. The writing on the stone was very faint. 这块石头上的字迹很模糊。

assemble vt. & vi.

1) vt. build sth., for example furniture, by putting all its parts together 组合;装配

e.g. They assemble the parts and components into a car.

他们把零部件装配成一辆汽车。

2) vi. come together and form a group 集合;召集;调集

e.g. The sirens are calling the men to assemble.

警报声在召令士兵集合。

assembly line 装配线

decay v. & n.

1) v. be gradually destroyed as a result of a natural process of change (使)腐烂;(使)腐败

e.g. It used to be believed that sugar could decay the teeth.

过去人们认为糖会腐蚀牙齿。

1) n. [U] the gradual destruction of sth. as a result of a natural process of change 腐烂;腐败

e.g. The wood is treated with preservative to prevent decay.

这块木头用防腐剂处理过以防止腐烂。

Phrases

1. dig up:

1) dig holes in an area of land 挖掘;挖(洞)

e.g. The workmen began to dig up the lot next door for a site of a new office building.

工人们已在比邻的那块地上破土动工,以便建造一幢新办公大楼。

2) find hidden or forgotten information by careful searching (通过仔细搜索)找出,揭露

e.g. A special group was organized to dig up the details of the case.

成立了一个专门小组来查明该案件的各个细节。

2. keep sb. company:

spend time with someone so that they will not feel lonely 陪伴某人

e.g.

(1) Rita’s husband is away for the week, so I thought I’d go over and keep her company.

丽塔的丈夫这个星期外出不在家,所以我想过去给她作伴。

(2) She stayed at home to keep company with her younger sister.

她留在家里陪伴她妹妹。
