I. Grammar

Word formation

Find out how the following compound adjectives are formed.

1. thought-provoking: n. + present participle

2. human-induced: n. + past participle

Examples:

1. A thought-provoking challenge is a challenge that provokes thought.

2. Human-induced climate change means the change is induced by human beings.

There + be + nothing for it but …

There + be + nothing for it but … can be used before a noun clause to emphasize that this is the only possible choice or course of action. Note that the expression is followed by the infinitive form of a verb.

Example:look at the sentence.

First of all, learning thousands of characters is a chore, and there's nothing for it but to learn them by heart.

You can rewrite like this:

First of all, learning thousands of characters is a chore, and there is nothing for it but to learn them by heart.
