1. Word formation: -age

1. Look at the sentence from the passage Longitude

North or south of that line, however, the mileage value of each degree decreases

 

The suffix –age often signals a noun. In this cases mile is also a noun, but often the –age ending is used for a collective noun.


Example:

mileage dosage percentage postage usage wreckage

very

1. Look at the sentence from the passage Longitude

To learn one’s longitude at sea, one needs to know what time it is abroad ship and also the time at home port or another place of known longitude — at the very same moment.

 

Notice how the word very is used in the pattern very (+adj) +noun to mean exactly the same or identical.


Example:

1. He asked her to marry him in the park where they first met.

  He asked her to marry him in the very park where they first met.

2. I was dismayed to see her turn up at the party wearing the same dress I had on.

  I was dismayed to see her turn up at the party wearing the very same dress I had on.
