Cubism (立体派) became the most
influential (有影响的) style of art
during the first half of the 20th century. Pablo Picasso and Georges
Braque(1), under the influence of Cézanne(2), developed this new
style as an exploration of the visual properties
(属性) of form. The Cubists also explored the notion
(观念) of multiple (多样的) viewpoints,
depicting (描述) people and objects
from several angles within the same painting. Picasso has reduced
this composition组成 to flattened
(变平的) planes and a somber (忧郁的)
color scheme (策划), emphasizing
the two - dimensionality (维数)
of the canvas.
(1) Braque [bra:k]: 布拉克((1882-1963)法国画家,立体主义画派之一。曾参加野兽派绘画运动,后又创作"拼贴画"。代表作《抱吉他的男人》。
(2) Cézanne [si`zAn]:塞尚(1839-1906)法国画家,后期印象派代表,认为自然物体均与简洁的几何体相似。代表作《玩纸牌者》。

An artist asked the gallery (画廊)
owner if there had been any interest in his paintings on display
(展览)at that time.
"I have good news and bad news," the owner replied. "The
good news is hat a gentleman enquired
(询问) about your work and wondered if it would appreciate in value after
your death. When I told him it would, he bought all 15 of your paintings."
"That's wonderful!" the artist exclaimed. "What's the bad
news?" "The guy was your doctor."
