4. Adverbial clauses (状语从句): they are clauses that serve as verb modifiers, answering the questions when, where, how, for what reason, under what condition, for what purpose, etc.

1) Linking words that denote (表示) time are: when, while, as, before, after, as soon as, since, until, till, etc.
a. We will stay here till it stops raining.
b. He has made a lot of friends since he came to Lanzhou University.
c. My dog jumped to greet me as soon as it saw me.
d. When he returned to his hometown, he found that it took on a new look.

2) Linking words that denote place are: where, wherever.
a. The teacher started where they stopped yesterday.
b. He will go wherever he can make a better living.

3) Linking words that denote purpose are: so that, in order that, lest, etc.
a. These men will risk their lives in order that we may survive the fire.
b. They wrote the notice in several languages so that foreign students could understand.
c. You should take the umbrella with you lest it should rain.

4) Linking words that denote result are: so…that, such…that, and so.
a. The snow fell so fast that our footsteps were covered up in a few minutes.
b. He is such a hard-working student that he wins a scholarship every year.
c. At the ball, no one took notice of him, so he left.

5) Linking words that denote concession (让步) are: though, although, while, etc.
a. Although money is not his sole concern, he does think he should make enough of it to guarantee a happy life.
虽然钱不是他唯一关心的，但他的确想挣足够的钱以保证过一种快乐的生活。
b. While I admit there are problems; I don't think they can't be solved.
我承认有很多问题，但我想它们都能解决。
c. He finally quit the job, though he needs money badly.
虽然他很缺钱，但他还是辞了这份工作。

6) Linking words that denote conditions (条件) are: if, on condition that, unless etc.
a. You won't get high grade unless you attend my class every time.
如果你每次不上我的课，你不会得高分。
b. You can camp in my field provided that/on condition that/as long as you leave no mess.
你可以在我的地里宿营，假如（只要）你不乱仍东西的话。
c. She won't forgive me if I am late.
如果我迟到了，她不会原谅我的。
