Deng 's Tender Voice Still Lingers
eng, a Taiwanese, was perhaps the
most famous Chinese pop singer worldwide. Some of her best-loved
songs - "When will you come again" and "I care about
you only" - evoke nostalgia [ nRs`tAldVi[
] and timeless romance.
eng died at age 42 from an asthma [ `Asm[
] attack during a visit to Thailand on May 8, 1995. The anniversary
[ Ani`v[:s[ri ] will be commemorated
[ k[`mem[reit ] by her fans in Asia
and elsewhere.
Hundreds of tourists visit her grave daily
at "Terasa Deng Memorial Park" in Taiwan.
Deng's singing, often accompanied by a
full-string orchestra [`R:kistr[], brings to mind the poignancy
[`pRin[nsi] of the pre-rock "n" roll ear when slow love
songs topped the charts.
Her songs reigned on Chinese pop charts
for three decades. She appeared in a number of movies and was romantically
linked with stars such as Jackie Chan, but she never married. In
the 1980s, she disappeared from the music scene and retired to Paris.
Still, her music remained popular after she stopped performing.
Besides Mandarin, Deng sang in English,
Cantonese, Japanese and Taiwanese.From Taiwan, her fame spread to
Japan, China's Mainland and the United States, where she once sang
at the Lincoln Center in New York and was the first Chinese female
singer to perform under contract at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
