Many 1aspects
of our lives 2affect
our health. One of these is how we eat. This is a subject
that scientists are now studying. One study of the 3diet
of Chinese people living in the countryside 4showed
that they eat much more fruit, vegetables, and grains than most people
in industrialized countries like
the United States or Canada. They also 5consume
three times as much fiber. These
people get fewer calories from
fat and eat meat only about once a week. The result? The rate of heart
disease and certain cancers is
very low.
Another aspect of our lives that affects health is exercise.
While the Chinese people in the study consume more calories daily,
they are not overweight. Why?
They do more physical work, and
since most of them do not have cars, they walk or ride bicycles.
Doctors everywhere now 6recommend
exercise for people of all ages. Exercise helps control
weight and 7relieve
tension and stress.
A positive mental
attitude also seems to 8have
a lot to do with health. Studies show that people with a good attitude
about life seem to get sick less often than other people. Dr.
William Fry, Jr., a Stanford
University researcher, has 9studied the beneficial
effects of laughter for many years. He says, "When we laugh,
muscles are 10activated.
When we stop laughing, these muscles relax." Many people with
painful conditions 11benefit
greatly from a healthy dose
of laughter. Many headache sufferers
feel the same relief.
Your life is in your own hands … and the quality of that life
also. You 12owe it
to yourself to be beautiful, clever, thin, and healthy. If you fail,
it's because you're not trying hard enough.
