课前热身Warm-up

In early 1998, a gunman opened fire on a bar in Northern Ireland injuring five. The violence, which had gone on for thirty years, was between extremists – those who wanted to remain British and those who did not. The opposing leaders, David Trimble, leader of the pro-British group and Gerry Adams, spokesman for the separatist extremist, wouldn't speak. British Prime Minister Tony Blair set a deadline to meet. The decision made was for Northern Ireland to remain British but have its own parliament and have closer ties to the Irish Republic. Moderate nationalist John Hume shared how the opposing sides could work towards the future. Extremist gunmen were released for one day to seal the deal. The pro-British marched causing an uproar amongst the others. A car bomb killed fourteen women and five children and left 330 injured. Twenty thousand people from all political sides gathered for the memorial. Trimble, Protestant, and Hume, Catholic, appeared together on stage at a pro-peace rock concert.
