The British government has announced plans to tighten immigration rules. The plans were revealed in Queen Elizabeth's annual speech to mark the formal opening of parliament on May 8, 2013. “My government will bring forward a bill that further reforms Britain’s immigration system," Queen Elizabeth said. "The bill will ensure that this country attracts people who will contribute and deters those who will not.”
In July, the Home Office launched an ad campaign which sparked a controversy. Mobile billboards calling on illegal immigrants to leave the UK have been criticized as a step too far by politicians. Campaign backers have hailed the initiative as an “alternative to arrest,” while critics decry the adverts as outright “intimidation.” The new measures have triggered debate in UK society with many politicians up in arms over what they have condemned as “intimidation” from the British government.
