课前热身Warm-up

Back in 1981, more than 360 economists reckoned Thatcherite policies would end in financial calamity and a similar debate is taking place now over George Osborne's prescription for the economy. George Osborne, Britain’s 39-year-old chancellor of the exchequer, is not just holding the fate of Britain’s coalition government in his hands. His experiment – some would say reckless gamble – with austerity has made him the poster boy of fiscal hawks around the world. If Osborne’s plan to sort out Britain’s yawning deficit in just four years works, it will inspire politicians and economists for years to come. George Soros predicted in 2011 that the UK Government's austerity measures would send the UK back into recession by saying “I don’t think they (the cuts) can be implemented without pushing the economy into a recession. My expectation is that it will prove to be unsustainable.”
