Education Secretary Michael Gove has declared GCSEs will be "more challenging, more ambitious and more rigorous" after a radical shake-up. The reforms will see pupils in England study whole Shakespeare plays, learn more complex maths and science and complete an in-depth study in history. The new qualifications in English, maths, the sciences, geography and history are set to be introduced in September 2015, with the first exams in summer 2017. Mr Gove told MPs about the changes in GCSE content as England's exams regulator, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), set out proposals to overhaul their structure.
