The aim of this paper is to present a classification for the speech act of thanking as reflected
in the textbooks for teaching and learning Spanish as a foreign language and to ascertain
the formulaic sequences used when expressing gratitude (i.e. from a pragmalinguistic
viewpoint) in the Spanish language.
This qualitative study examines the pragmatic tools that first-year learners of German from
two intact classes have at their disposal at the beginning and at the end of an eight-week
period. The control (n ¼ 15) and treatment groups (n ¼ 22) watched a feature film, The
Edukators, as part of the study.
