| Example C “The project is a perfectly mad one ， ”Grassini exclaimed ． “It is simply putting one's head into the lion's mouth out of sheer wantonness.”(E ． Voynich) “ 这一项目真是愚蠢极了 ” ，格拉辛尼嚷叫起来。 “ 完全是胡来，简直是 拿自己的脑袋往狮子嘴里放 ” 。 Example D “For five-and -thirty years,” she said ， and with great justice ， “I have never seen the individual who has dared in my own house to question my authority. I have nourished a viper in my bosom .”(W ． Thackeray) 她话说得很平允 ,“35 年来，还素来没有人敢在本人的学校里违抗我的命令，我这当真是 在自己的胸口里喂养了一条毒蛇 ” 。 Example E 所以这李纨虽青春丧偶，且处于膏梁锦绣之中，竞如 “ 槁木死灰 ” 一般，一概不问， ……( 曹雪芹《红楼梦》 ) SO this young widow living in the lap of luxury was no better off than withered wood or cold ashes ， taking no interest in the outside world… Example F 咳 ! 这一来， 竹篮子打水一场空了 ! ( 梁斌《红旗谱》 ) Ah! We were drawing water in a bamboo basket ! 4.2 Using an idiom of similar meanings but dissimilar forms We often find that an idiom in the target language has a similar meaning with a certain idiom in the source 1anguage though the two idioms employ different lexical items ， i.e ． they are in different forms or they consist of different metaphoric images ． In this case ， we can use the idiom with the similar meaning in the target language to translate the one in the source language ． Example A I'd much rather see her once or twice and not do anything about it……what couldd I do about it anyway? She's a bit out Of my class ， don't you think? If I did try to do anything ， I'd only get sent off with a flea in my ear ． (K ． Amis) 我倒情愿见她一两面就算了一一我究竟还能干点什么呢 ? 你不觉得她和我不是怎么相称吗 ? 如果我真心想干点什么的话，也管保受辱给 碰一鼻子灰 。 Example B Mother's neighbors will laugh their heads off if she loses him again ． She doesn't know why she should think of Mother's neighbors except that all the time she was home Mother kept reminding her of how they sneered and there was always that with Mother the feeling that she was dull and plain and a disappointment ， and she thought when she got a husband it would be all over ， a11 that ． 若是她再次失去他，那母亲的邻居们会 笑掉牙 的，她不晓得怎么现今竟想起了母亲的邻居们。只记得在家时，母亲累累提起他们的冷嘲热讽，那时候母亲总觉得她不活泼，不好看，令人失望。她当年也以为，只要嫁了人，这种情况就会了结，一切都不会再是问题了。 Example C The criminal said that he would turn over a new leaf if he could be given lenient treatment ． 那个犯人说如果能得到宽大处理，他一定 洗心革面 ，从新做人。 Example D Very well, put your money in that firm and work for it ． It's all to no purpose ． I tell you that you are just ploughing the sand . 好吧，把你的钱投资那家商行，替它工作吧。你这样做毫无意义。我告诉你，你只会 徒劳无功，白费力气 ！ Example E 现在合同已签了，真是 木已成舟，生米煮成了熟饭 ，只好如此了。 As the contrast has been signed ， what's done is done and can't be undone . Example F 如今便赶着躲了，料也躲不及，少不得要使个 “ 金蝉脱壳 ” 的法子 ……( 曹雪芹《红楼梦》 ) Well ， it's too late to hide now ． I must try to avoid suspicion by throwing off the scent ．．． |
