Translation of Idioms

4.3 Translation by paraphrase

If there is no match in the idioms between the target language and the source language or it is inappropriate to use idiomatic language in the target text, the most common way that we can use probably is translating idioms by paraphrase .

    Example A

I've let the cat out of the bag already , Mr . Corthel , and I might as well tell the whole thing now . (F . Norris)

    我早已 把隐秘泄露了出来 ,科尔西先生,干脆现时就把全部底情透漏给你吧。

    Example B

“He didn't come near us,”said Godfrey , “so why should he come to see you?”

“At least,” she said , “I should have thought he knew what side

    his bread's buttered. ”(M . Spark)

    “ 他并没有靠近我们 ” ,戈弗雷说, “ 那为什么他非要来看望你不可呢 ?”

    “ 至少 ,” 她说, “ 我本该想到他是 明白自身的利益所在的 。 ”

    Example C

Among so many well—dressed and cultured people , the country girl felt like a fish out of water

    同这么多穿着体面而又有教养的人在一起,这位乡下姑娘感到 很不自在

    Example D

The teenagers don't invite Bob to their parties because he is a wet blanket

    青少年们不邀请鲍勃参加他们的聚会因为他是 一个令人扫兴的人

    Example E

    刘雨生回到乡政府,把老谢的话, 一五一十 ,告诉了邓秀梅和李月辉。 ( 周立波《山乡巨变》 )

When Liu Yusheng got back to the township government . He recounted everything Lao Xie had said in detail to Deng Xiumei and Li Yuehui .

    Example F

    我要是有个 三长两短 ,你给玉山捎个话 ! ( 杜鹏程《保卫延安》 )

If anything should happen to me , let Yushan know !

4.4 Translation by omission

An idiom may sometimes be omitted at all in the target text because it has no close match in the target language , its meaning cannot be easily paraphrased . or for stylistic reasons .

    Example A

“Yes , you must take everything,''said Magdalen . “I”ll pay for the taxi if you like.” Now she was as cool as a lettuce . (I . Murdoch)

    “ 好吧,你一定要把一切东西都拿走。 ” 马格达伦说, “ 可以的话,车费由我来付。 ” 此刻,她极其冷静。

    Example B

l must dry some seaweed and line this crevice . I could be as snug as a bug in a rug . (W . Golding)

    我必得把一些海草弄干,把有缝隙的地方划出来。我会感到非常舒服的。

    Example C

    对于胜利了的人民,这 ( 指权力 ) 是如同 布帛菽粟 - 一样地不可以须臾离开的东西。 ( 《毛泽东选集》四卷 )

Like food and clothing , this power is something a victorious people cannot do without even for a moment .

    Example E

    花园里面是人间的乐园,有的是吃不了的 大米白面 ,穿不完的绫罗绸缎,花不完的 金银财宝 。 ( 周而复《上海的早晨》 )
