Pragmatic meaning is the meaning the writer intends to pass
on to the reader in his or her writing in the particular context
the writer has created. This is what we usually mean by "reading
between the lines". For example, the sentence of "Haste
makes waste?" I finally whimpered. (Passage A, Unit 5)
intends to impress the reader that the author was not sure
whether Haste makes waste is a proverb or not, although
the literal meaning doesn't carry such a hint of doubt. A
writer will always carefully choose words, usages and rhetorical
devices to express his intended meaning explicitly, but in
many cases this might be implied. If one fails to recognize
the author's intention, feelings or attitude, one may misunderstand
the whole passage, even though each individual sentence is
well understood.
