| 2.3 不定式短语 不定式短语，在句子里可能是动词的状语、名词的定语，也可以是宾语补足语等。不定式最复杂而又最难辨别的，就是它的副词用法。那可以用来表示‘目的'，‘原 因'‘结果'‘理由'‘条件'，‘让步'等等，一不当心，就会译错。因此，要准确把握不定式的语法功能和语义，只有对它进行逻辑语义分析和判断。例如： [1] Such instruments are so well known as not to require detailed description here ． 这些仪表众所周知，不需要在此详细介绍。 根据上文的概念，该不定式应是状语，译文符合逻辑。 [2] Like other electron devices ， they have the ability to control the movement of charge of electricity ． 像其它电子设备一样，它们有能力控制电荷的运动。 这个句子里的不定式，既可以理解为宾语的补语，也可以理解为定语，修饰“the ability ” 。根据逻辑分析，把不定式视为“ the ability ”的补语更合适。因为机器设备的能力所指的是“ means ／ way ” 等，“控制”的动作是由“ means ”等产生的。 [3] She found Peter resigned to carry out the order · 她发现彼得惟命是从，只好执行这个命令。 [4] When drawing diagrams of magnetic fields it is usual to put arrow — heads on the lines of force to show which way the force acts on a N pole ． 画磁场图时，通常在每条磁力线上标上箭头，以便表示力作用于 N 极的方向。 [5] We were delighted to learn of the arrival of their baby ． 我们听说他们生了孩子大为高兴。 高兴的原因是 to learn …不定式表达的。 [6] The little boy will grow up to be a fine figure of a young man ． 这位小孩会成长为一个英俊的小伙子。 “ to be a fine figure of a young man ”是表示结果的。 [7] What a crazy you were to have expected him to help you! 你指望他会帮你的忙，多么疯 ! [8] With the increased knowledge available and the widening of the field of engineering to include so many diverse branches ， it is usual to find groups 0r teams of engineers and scientists working on a single project ． 由于实用的知识越来越多，由于工程技术领域扩大，包容许多不同的分支，因此，工程师们和科学家们合作，成组成队研究同一个课题的现象随处可见。 句子里有两个不定式： to include … branches 和 to find … project ，前者作补语，后者作主语。对原文的理解和翻译，都应以因果思维逻辑为基本框架。 2.4 指代关系 这是指代词的指代和关系代词的指代，确切弄清它们指代什么，例如定语从句中的“ which ”指代一个词、短语还是句子 , 最可靠的方法是进行逻辑分析和判断。 [1] That does not prove that it does not exist ； but it does mean that noise is less dangerous than ， say ， being brought up in an orphanage---which really is mental health hazard. 这一点并不能证明不存在这种影响，然而，它却意味着噪音与类如孤儿院抚养成人这种事情相比，危害性要轻微得多 ----- 孤儿院才是真正危害精神健康的所在。 这一句译文摘自《新概念英语》第四册第 31 段短文 ( 西安外国语学院英语系 ) 。读了这句译文，稍加思索，就会发现译文不太对头，真令人狐疑满腹，还得看整段原文。原来，原文是调查比较生活在不同环境下，噪音对人们精神健康的危害。本句是说，在孤儿院长大的人，其精神健康受到的危害，比噪音的危害大。 译者对 which 指代什么理解错了。 which 不是指 orphanage 一个词，而是指“ being brought up in an orphanage" 。因此，这句英文可以改译成： 这一事实并不能证明噪音没有影响，这的确意味着噪音的危害，但是，这种危害，比如说，比在孤儿院长大的人受到的危害小，而在孤儿院长大对精神健康来说，才真的是一种危害。 [2] She was discreet and modest and well — behaved which he hopes young women to be when they were pretty · 她谨慎、谦虚、端庄，这正是他所希望的漂亮的年轻妇女们具有的品质。 本句的 which 指代 discreet and modest and well — behaved. |
