下列从句中的省略 (Omission in the Following Clauses)

　　1. 在以 than, as 引起的比较从句中，常省去和主句相同的部分而突出相比较的部分，如：
　　　We should think more of others than (we should think) ourselves.
　　　Many girls are doing better than the boys are (doing).
　　　These old men worked with as much enthusiasm as young people (worked).

　　2. 在 the more ... the more ... 句型中，主句和从句都常省去一些成分，如：
　　　The sooner the operation (is) the greater the hope of saving his life (will be).
　　　The more (it is) the better (it will be).

　　3. 在一些表示时间、地点、条件、方式或让步等的从句中，如果谓语包含有 be，主语又和主句的主语一致，或者主语是 it，就　　　常常把从句中的主语和谓语的一部分（特别是动词 be）省略，如：
　　　When (he was) told to go to bed, he started to cry.
　　　She was arrested while (she was) on a trip to India.
　　　Treatment was given whenever (it is) necessary.
　　　They will try to put the plan into practice as quickly as (it is) possible.
　　　If (it is) possible, they will go to Shanghai next month.

　　4. 在以 no matter what (whatever), whether 等引导的让步从句中，也常有一些省略，如：
　　　In our company, everybody is well taken care of, no matter what his position (is).
　　　I must get it done whatever the cost (may be).
　　　Whether you like it or (does) not (like it), you'll have to do it.
